Mayo Clinic Hospital ranks number one for best nursing care in survey

PHOENIX – Mayo Clinic Hospital ranked number one for “best nursing care” out of 154 hospitals that appeared in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” list earlier in 2009. Nurses were ranked for their communications skills. U.S. News published an article in their Sunday, Oct. 20, edition noting the ranking for Mayo nurses.

According to the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), survey results published for 2008 by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency that administers the survey, reveal that 82 percent of patients said Mayo nurses “always” communicated well. “Communicated well” means that nurses explained things clearly, listened carefully and treated the patient with courtesy and respect.

This is significantly higher than the national average of 74 percent.

Mayo Clinic Hospital also topped the list in terms of how patients rated hospitals overall. In the 2008 HCAHPS survey, 85 percent of patients rated Mayo Clinic Hospital a “9″ or a “10″ on a scale from 0 to 10, where “0″ means the “worst hospital possible” and “10′ means “best hospital possible.” This is also significantly higher than the national average of 64 percent.

Mayo Clinic Hospital also scored in the top 10 percent of hospitals listed in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” list in terms of pain management.

Now in its 20th year, the 2009-2010 America’s Best Hospitals” guide, published by U.S. News Media Group, includes rankings of 174 medical centers nationwide. – Mayo Clinic
